Journalism has been something that runs in the blood of Syed Talat Hussain. Much before he became a prominent journalist and anchorperson, his elder brother Syed Rafat Hussain used to participate and host programs on political commentary as well as current affairs on Pakistan Television (PTV). As a print journalist, he has contributed to prominent publications like Newsline, Dawn, Time Magazine, Daily Times, Daily Express and the Indian newspaper India Today.
He started his career as a TV anchorperson from PTV during the 1990s appearing in the morning news show 'Saveray Saveray'. The pinnacle of his stint on PTV came when he interviewed the former Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Suraj and left her speechless with her questions. After the introduction of private news channels, Talat made a move to Aaj News where he worked as the Director News and hosted his own current affairs program 'Live With Talat'.
At present, he is conducting his own current affairs show on Dawn News by the name of 'News Night With Talat'. In 2010, Talat was part of the Freedom Flotilla which was captured and later released by the Israeli forces.
