According to Shahid Afridi, the domestic structure must be improved for consistent cricket performance.
Pakistan entered the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 ranked number 8th. In a sudden turn of events, Pakistan managed to win home the ICC Champions Trophy through hard word and struggle. Pakistan’s iconic cricketing personality; Shahid Afridi appreciated the national team’s performance and struggle and quoted:
“When Pakistan entered the tournament, no one had any expectations that the team would even reach the semifinals, but the way they have played and won the trophy deserves appreciation.”
He further added:
“This is the beauty of ICC tournaments; that no one can expect who will be in the finals. Any team can come up as a surprise.”
Pakistan lost terribly to India by 124 runs in its first match of the tournament. Pakistan, however, made an unbelievable comeback and managed to defeat England to reach the Finals where it outclassed India by 180 runs and snatched the “champions” title from the Indians. While Shahid Afridi appreciated the efforts of men in green, he also mentioned that for a better and consistent performance, domestic cricket must be promoted and improved. He quoted:
“I have been and will keep on saying that the structure of domestic cricket in Pakistan should be modified, the quality of pitches and balls should be increased and that the standard of umpires should be improved.”
Afridi’s Social Efforts
Shahid Afridi who is also known as Lala is a Pakistan hero and a legendary cricketer. He’s known by the name “Boom Boom Afridi” due to his explosive comebacks out of the blue. Although Shahid Afridi is an excellent cricketer, he’s an active charity worker too. He has his own charity foundation named “Shahid Afridi Foundation” that aims at providing education, health, and sports facilities to the people of Pakistan. It’s a non-profit organization founded in March 2014. Talking about the condition of domestic cricket in Pakistan, he also discussed his plans of opening a cricket academy in Karachi that will promote cricket among youngsters and will also produce international level stars.
