Amjad Islam Amjad Criticizes Current Dramas


The legendary poet and writer, Amjad Islam Amjad talks about his writing life and also comments on new dramas while talking to a newspaper respondent in his own residence at defense. Amjad Islam Amjad says that the dramas of today do not depict the world we truly live in.

Mr. Amjad Islam Amjad has written so many popular plays in the golden days of PTV and one of his famous dramas was Waaris. But it has been so long since he penned down any drama for the television. The reason he gave for this was truly genuine. He says:

“Drama has gone far from realism. Some plays written today are good but most did not depict the society we belong to. When PTV started its transmission in 1964 it had people like Kanwar Aftab and Aslam Azhar, in 1974 people like Ayub Khawar, Shoaib Mansoor and Sahira Kazmi joined. Even till the 1980s, PTV had some meat when it came to producers, but hiring made in 2000 perhaps bore no fruit in terms of talent”

Literary Activities of Amjad Islam Amjad

Amjad Islam Amjad told the respondent that he is nowadays writing 2 weekly columns for a newspaper. He is also thinking of writing an autobiography. Amjad Islam Amjad has also been busy in working for educational and charity organizations. Talking about the now generation, Amjad Islam Amjad said that they only read English novels. They cannot even read Urdu well and they do not have any Interest in Urdu. Commenting on the modern Urdu poets he said:

“Now it seems as if there is a marathon in which poets of all tastes are running. There may be a dearth of very good Urdu poets but nevertheless, we have fine poets such as Dr. Waheed Ahmed.”
